Seeking Information on Family Members

If you are seeking information about family members in Haiti, you can call the US State Department about family members at
888-407-4747
or 202-647-5225 -- however, the department admits that patience is needed because "....communications are very difficult within Haiti at this time," which seems to be an understatement.  You may spend a long time hearing a recording saying, "Our Embassy is still in the early stages of contacting American citizens though our Warden Network"  (The Warden Network is a system which allows the U.S. Embassy in a foreign country to maintain communication with, and disseminate information to, the American community there. [It] is managed through the Embassy's Consular Section office.)  Obviously, as they point out, the communications is very slow, but perseverance and patience at the State Department information phone lines is the best source of reliable and most current information.

The FBI Warnings:
Please be aware that the FBI has warned Americans that while tragedies such as this terrible Haitian earthquake can bring out the most noble of human responses, it also as has been seen in past tragedies around the globe, that they sometimes can bring out the worst in people as well.  It does not take long for the scam artists to come out of the woodwork to prey on the generosity and goodness of others.

To counter those who would rip off citizens trying to help, the FBI along with the NCDF (National Center for Disaster Fraud) has set up a telephone hotline to report suspected relief scams related to the Haitian Earthquake Relief effort.  If you suspect such activity, call 866-720-5721, or you can also email information to disaster@leo.gov

Other Cautions:
Do NOT donate anything other than money unless the charitable organization specifically says they are accepting material goods. It is ill-advised to mail care packages of toys, food or clothes directly out of the country.  The chances of such items actually reaching anyone to do any good are nil.  Bring goods and non-perishable food stuffs to organizations that specifically state that they are equipped to transport and deliver these goods.  Before bringing any such goods to an organization, be sure to call ahead to see if and when they can accept material donations.

Material goods are accepted by the AidMatrix Network which can be reached at www.aidmatrix.org.  Many other organization are also collecting goods including --

The Brooklyn College Office of Diversity and Equity Programs
Rm. 2147 Boylan Hall on the Brooklyn College Campus
2900 Campus Road
Brooklyn NY 11210

Goods will be accepted there until Friday, February 15, until 5pm.  Supplies collected will be given to a group of doctors and healthcare workers who will be leaving shortly for Haiti.

The following items are most needed:

Medical: Band Aids, Iodine, Splints, Alcohol, Bandages, Sutra kits, Advil/Tylenol, vitamins
Food: granola bars, candies, energy bars and other small non-perishables
Baby items: baby clothes, bottles, blankets, diapers, anything that a child or baby might need
Other items: mosquito spray, feminine products (pads, underwear, t-shirts, blankets, socks)
